INTRODUCTION
The Electron Machine Corporation has been designing x-ray gages and mill control
systems for more than forty years. Our gages use x-ray pulse technology to provide good
measurement results with lower radiation. The SXR-225 is the latest in solid state design
because it breaks with past line frequency response limitations. Operating at 225 hertz,
its fast response time keeps pace with the industry's faster processes and need for more
throughput with improved quality and lower costs.
1) a source unit to generate finitely controlled x-rays
2) a solid state detector to measure non-absorbed x-rays
3) a console of advanced modular design for control and readout of
the source and detector
The KV rating of the source unit is chosen to match product thickness and
material. In operation, the emitted x-ray pulses penetrate the material to be
measured. The amount of radiation reaching the detector is reduced by the absorption of
the product which in turn is a function of its thickness. The detected signal is sent to
the display/control console for alloy compensation and/or thickness display.
1) X-ray generation can be produced at the optimum level for the most desirable signal to noise ratio and stability considerations
2) When an x-ray gage is turned off radiation is not present. Isotope gages may have radiation half lives expressed in decades
3) Government regulations may be less stringent for operation of x-ray gages versus isotope gages
4) Non-contacting measurement offers better performance on irregular surfaces and poor operational environments
5) Most importantly, Electron Machine Corporation x-ray gages have a long standing record of rugged design, reliability, and good value

The standard unit provides an analog meter for deviation readout. The operator simply zeroes the meter on the material to be measured and deviation (typically +/- 10%) from this setting is displayed. Analog outputs for thickness and deviation are standard. When supplied with the optional microprocessor display control unit and standards magazine, a direct digital readout of thickness, setpoint, and deviation is provided. Calibration testing and standardization can be done at the touch of a button. Both digital and analog outputs for thickness and deviation can be sent to external devices.
